So he says to the first, \u201cHow much do you love me, my dear?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy,\u201d says she, \u201cas I love my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good,\u201d says he.<\/p>\n<p>So he says to the second, \u201cHow much do\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0love me, my dear?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy,\u201d says she, \u201cbetter nor all the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good,\u201d says he.<\/p>\n<p>So he says to the third, \u201cHow much do\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0love me, my dear?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy, I love you as fresh meat loves salt,\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>Well, he was that angry. \u201cYou don\u2019t love me at all,\u201d says he, \u201cand in my house you stay no more.\u201d So he drove her out there and then, and shut the door in her face.<\/p>\n<p>Well, she went away on and on till she came to a fen, and there she gathered a lot of rushes and made them into a kind of a sort of a cloak with a hood, to cover her from head to foot, and to hide her fine clothes. And then she went on and on till she came to a great house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want a maid?\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, we don\u2019t,\u201d said they.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t nowhere to go,\u201d says she; \u201cand I ask no wages, and do any sort of work,\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d says they, \u201cif you like to wash the pots and scrape the saucepans you may stay,\u201d said they.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin-left: 20px; margin-right: 20px;\" alt=\"cap o rushes 4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wisdomtales.org\/images\/stories\/illustrations\/fairytales\/cap%20o%20rushes%204.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"272\" \/>So she stayed there and washed the pots and scraped the saucepans and did all the dirty work. And because she gave no name they called her \u201cCap o\u2019 Rushes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, one day there was to be a great dance a little way off, and the servants were allowed to go and look on at the grand people. Cap o\u2019 Rushes said she was too tired to go, so she stayed at home.<\/p>\n<p>But when they were gone she offed with her cap o\u2019 rushes, and cleaned herself, and went to the dance. And no one there was so finely dressed as her.<\/p>\n<p>Well, who should be there but her master\u2019s son, and what should he do but fall in love with her the minute he set eyes on her. He wouldn\u2019t dance with any one else.<\/p>\n<p>But before the dance was done Cap o\u2019 Rushes slipt off, and away she went home. And when the other maids came back she was pretending to be asleep with her cap o\u2019 rushes on.<\/p>\n<p>Well, next morning they said to her, \u201cYou did miss a sight, Cap o\u2019 Rushes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was that?\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy, the beautifullest lady you ever see, dressed right gay and ga\u2019. The young master, he never took his eyes off her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I should have liked to have seen her,\u201d says Cap o\u2019 Rushes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, there\u2019s to be another dance this evening, and perhaps she\u2019ll be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, come the evening, Cap o\u2019 Rushes said she was too tired to go with them. But, before the dance was over, she slipt off, and home she went, and when the maids came back she, pretended to be asleep with her cap o\u2019 rushes on.<\/p>\n<p>Next day they said to her again, \u201cWell, Cap o\u2019 Rushes, you should ha\u2019 been there to see the lady. There she was again, gay and ga\u2019, and the young master he never took his eyes off her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, there,\u201d says she, \u201cI should ha\u2019 liked to ha\u2019 seen her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d says they, \u201cthere\u2019s a dance again this evening, and you must go with us, for she\u2019s sure to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, come this evening, Cap o\u2019 Rushes said she was too tired to go, and do what they would she stayed at home. He danced with none but her and never took his eyes off her. When she wouldn\u2019t tell him her name, nor where she came from, he gave her a ring and told her if he didn\u2019t see her again he should die.<\/p>\n<p>Well, before the dance was over, off she slipped, and home she went, and when the maids came home she was pretending to be asleep with her cap o\u2019 rushes on.<\/p>\n<p>Well, next day they says to her, \u201cThere, Cap o\u2019 Rushes, you didn\u2019t come last night, and now you won\u2019t see the lady, for there\u2019s no more dances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell I should have rarely liked to have seen her,\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>The master\u2019s son he tried every way to find out where the lady was gone, but go where he might, and ask whom he might, he never heard anything about her. And he got worse and worse for the love of her till he had to keep his bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake some gruel for the young master,\u201d they said to the cook. \u201cHe\u2019s dying for the love of the lady.\u201d The cook she set about making it when Cap o\u2019 Rushes came in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you a-doing of?\u201d, says she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to make some gruel for the young master,\u201d says the cook, \u201cfor he\u2019s dying for love of the lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me make it,\u201d says Cap o\u2019 Rushes.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the cook wouldn\u2019t at first, but at last she said yes, and Cap o\u2019 Rushes made the gruel. And when she had made it she slipped the ring into it on the sly before the cook took it upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The young man he drank it and then he saw the ring at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend for the cook,\u201d says he.<\/p>\n<p>So up she comes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho made this gruel here?\u201d says he.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did,\u201d says the cook, for she was frightened.<\/p>\n<p>And he looked at her,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you didn\u2019t,\u201d says he. \u201cSay who did it, and you shan\u2019t be harmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, then, \u2019twas Cap o\u2019 Rushes,\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend Cap o\u2019 Rushes here,\u201d says he.<\/p>\n<p>So Cap o\u2019 Rushes came.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you make my gruel?\u201d says he.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I did,\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get this ring?\u201d says he.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom him that gave it me,\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you, then?\u201d says the young man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll show you,\u201d says she. And she offed with her cap o\u2019 rushes, and there she was in her beautiful clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the master\u2019s son he got well very soon, and they were to be married in a little time. It was to be a very grand wedding, and every one was asked far and near. And Cap o\u2019 Rushes\u2019 father was asked. But she never told anybody who she was.<\/p>\n<p>But before the wedding she went to the cook, and says she:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to dress every dish without a mite o\u2019 salt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019ll be rare nasty,\u201d says the cook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t signify,\u201d says she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery well,\u201d says the cook.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the wedding-day came, and they were married. And after they were married all the company sat down to the dinner. When they began to eat the meat, that was so tasteless they couldn\u2019t eat it. But Cap o\u2019 Rushes\u2019 father he tried first one dish and then another, and then he burst out crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is the matter?\u201d said the master\u2019s son to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh!\u201d says he, \u201cI had a daughter. And I asked her how much she loved me. And she said \u2019As much as fresh meat loves salt.\u2019 And I turned her from my door, for I thought she didn\u2019t love me. And now I see she loved me best of all. And she may be dead for aught I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, father, here she is!\u201d says Cap o\u2019 Rushes.
